  • Which of the following microorganisms cannot tolerate oxygen?

Question: Which of the following microorganisms cannot tolerate oxygen?

    Options:

    Clostridium botulinum
    Staphylococcus aureus
    Penicillium roqueforti
    E. coli

    🔑Key Points:
    Clostridium botulinum
-Clostridium botulinum could be a gram-positive, rod-shaped, anaerobic, spore-forming, motile microorganism and produce a neurotoxin.
-It's an obligate anaerobe, which means that oxygen is toxic to the cells.
-Its Water Activity (aw) is 0.93.
-Its pH lies between 4.8 to 7.
    -It cannot tolerate Oxygen.
-This microorganism is highly heat resistant.
    🛑Important Points:
Classification of Microorganisms based on Gasesos (O2) Toleranc
botulinum is a microorganism that cannot tolerate Oxygen.

    •  Aerobes:
    -These microorganisms require Oxygen.
-The main characteristic is Aerobic Respirations (involves glycolysis, Kreb cycle, oxidative phosphorylation).
Obligate Aerobes: Microorganisms that need oxygen to grow are referred to as obligate aerobic microorganisms,e.g., Bacillus, Brucella, etc.
Obligate Anaerobes: These bacteria cannot use Oxygen, e.g., Clostridium is grow only in absence of oxygen.
Facultative Anaerobes: These are generally required Oxygen but in the absence of oxygen they are surviving,e.g., E.Coli, yeast, Staphylococcus, etc.
Aerotolerant Anaerobes: These Anaerobes cannot use O2/oxygen but tolerate the presence of Oxygen. e.g., Clostridium histolyticumS.
Microaerophiles: These are required oxygen but at low concentration, sensitive to a toxic form of oxygen. e.g., Campylobacter.

    🔴Additional Information:

    • Staphylococcus aureus:
-Staphylococcus aureus could be a gram-positive round-shaped microorganism, a member of the Firmicutes.
-It may be a usual member of the microbiota of the body often found within the higher tract and on the skin.
    -It can grow in Oxygen.

    • Penicillium roqueforti:
-Penicillium roqueforti could be a common saprotrophic fungus within the Penicillium.
-Widespread in nature, it may be isolated from soil, decaying organic matter, and plants.
-The major industrial use of this flora is the production of blue cheeses, seasoning agents, antifungals, polysaccharides, proteases, and alternative enzymes.
-The fungus has been a constituent of Roquefort, Stilton, blue cheese, Cabrales, Gorgonzola, and different blue cheeses.
-Penicillium roqueforti could also be manufacturing a mycotoxin throughout the action of Roquefort cheese (blue cheese).

    • E. coli:
-Escherichia coli is additionally referred to as E. coli could be a gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped, coliform bacteria of the genus Escherichia.
-It is usually found within the lower intestine of warm-blooded organisms.
