Question: Consider the following statements regarding: 1.Recently National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) and Central Statistics Office(CSO) has been merged to form the National Statistical Office(NSO). 2.NSO works under the ministry of electronics and information technology. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

    Options:

    Only 1
    Only 2
    Both 1 and 2
    Neither 1 nor 2

NSSO was established in 1950 for conducting large-scale sample surveys throughout India and it used to work under the ministry of statistics until 2019.
In May 2019 it was merged with Central Statistics Office (CSO) to form National Statistical Office (NSO). Hence 1 is correct.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) will be the governing ministry for newly constructed NSO and it will work under it. Hence Statement 2 is incorrect.

     🔑Key Points:
The C. Rangarajan committee formed in 2000, recommended the merger of CSO and NSSO to form a single body National Statistical Office.
    Impact of this merger-
    It will end NSSO's autonomy.
This merger leads to an easy outflow of information and data of MoSPI.
NSC may not able to exercise an independent oversight mechanism over NSO.
