Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an cell organelle that extends from the nucleus into the cytoplasm.
It consists of a network of membranes that mainly help in the transport of proteins.

• It can be of 2 types:
Rough ER (RER) – It consists of ribosomes and thus have a rough appearance.
Smooth ER (SER) – It does not have ribosomes and hence have a smooth appearance.

• SER functions vary depending on cell type:
In Adrenal gland, they help in synthesis of steroid hormones.
In liver, they help in detoxification of toxic wastes.
In skeletal muscles, they are known as sarcoplasmic reticulum and act as storage sites for calcium ions.
Another important function of SER is lipid synthesis.
